VSP Vision Care, or simply VSP, is a non-profit, doctor-governed, full-service vision care health insurance company operating in the U.S., Canada, UK, Ireland, and Australia. It has about 80 million members worldwide and is accepted by more than 40,000 eye care providers. It is currently the largest vision insurance company in the United States.
What to Buy
According to the Vision Council of America, approximately 75% of adults in the United States use some sort of vision correction with about 64% wearing eyeglasses and around 11% wearing contact lenses, either exclusively, or together with glasses. For most people, costs for exams and corrective devices are out-of-pocket expenses, and thus, on average, something as simple as a pair of glasses can cost around $350.
Vision insurance, on the other hand, can decrease your expenses significantly. For those who need corrective lenses, the savings received from having insurance offsets the cost of insurance, often paying for itself and then some. Even if you’ve never worn glasses, you may start to see a decrease of vision abilities once you hit middle age and suddenly need corrective lenses.
However, in the United States, original Medicare plans may not provide eye care coverage unless you have diabetes, and many private health insurances and Medicare Advantage plans don’t include vision insurance. In some cases, vision insurance is available through employer benefit programs. But you can also choose to buy individual vision insurance if you don’t have coverage through an employer which can help fill the gap and cover much of the expense associated with eye care.
If you’re considering getting a vision plan, you’ll want to choose one that pays for all the types of services that you need. VSP is one provider of vision insurance both for individuals and for employer plans.
Providing access to high-quality, cost-effective eye care to the United States, the UK, Canada, Australia, and Ireland; VSP was founded in 1955 by a group of optometrists with the goal of making optical services and devices more accessible and affordable to all people. More than 60 years later, that vision has evolved into providing world-class products and services to eye care professionals, employers, and to 88+ million members worldwide under a doctor-governed, not-for-profit business model with a network of more than 40,000 providers. The largest vision insurer in the United States, VSP has received an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau.3
No matter your life stage, VSP has options to keep you covered. As a VSP member, you’ll receive access to expert eye doctors, quality eyewear, and the affordability you deserve, all at low out-of-pocket costs.
The cost of an individual VSP vision insurance plan will vary depending on a number of factors, including the state where you live and whether you buy a 1-person, 2-person plan, or a family plan. Individual plan options start as low as $13 per month. Monthly premiums for employer-sponsored VSP plans range in price, depending on the plan option you select and whether you’re insuring just yourself or need a family plan.
To find a specific VSP Vision Care plan that needs your individual or family’s needs, you can visit VSP.com and receive a quote online. VSP Vision offers four types of plans: Standard, EasyOptions, Enhanced, and EyewearOnly120.
For the Standard Plan, monthly premiums start at just $13 with an eye exam copay of $15, basic lens (single vision, bifocal, trifocal) copay of $25, and allowances covering up to $150 in new frames or contacts (if allowed by your plan) plus an additional 20% savings on any amount that exceeds your copay with an additional $20 added for Featured/Designer Frames.
They also offer discounted options for upgrades to your lenses, such as scratch-resistant and anti-glare coatings, impact-resistance, progressive lenses, tinting, and UV protection. VSP Vision also provides savings and resources for those with diabetes since those with the health condition often also have declining vision abilities.
With this Standard Plan, VSP claims you’ll typically save $246 per year on the costs of vision exams and eye care.
If you need progressive lenses or tinting, consider VSP’s EasyOptions Plan (for around $13 to $15 more than Standard Plan per month), which offers all the benefits of a Standard Plan but with more Custom Benefit Options including higher frame and contact lens allowance of $230 (or $80 more than the Standard $150) as well as no copays on progressive and tinted lenses. The Plan also includes membership in the Healthy Vision Association (HVA) which typically costs $18/year. Membership in the Healthy Vision Association automatically provides you with discount programs that can save you hundreds of dollars every year on health, travel, and office-related goods and services.
The Enhanced Plan, on the other hand, is an alternative to EasyOptions which focuses more on offering more lens option discounts on premium lenses with anti-glare, scratch resistant and impact resistant coatings.
EyewearOnly120 is VSP’s lowest priced option for those who just need new glasses or contacts, have a current prescription, and don’t need an annual exam. The plan only covers frames and lenses and excludes exam copays.
While all plans do not cover LASIK, you can receive a coupon for up to 25% off of services provided by their accredited list of approved LASIK providers. And, like most vision insurance plans, VSP does not include coverage for eye surgeries or therapies, which fall under medical policy benefits.
Along with your corrective lens fitting and prescription, your Standard, EasyOptions, or Enhanced comes with a VSP WellVision Exam combining a comprehensive vision evaluation with a diagnostic medical eye exam (in the case of a medical evaluation, your doctor may ask you for your medical ID card to bill your medical insurance, in addition to your vision insurance).
Vision Evaluation typically involves a refractive exam, dilation, and prescription for glasses or contact lenses. A Medical Evaluation by your VSP-accredited eye doctor, on the other hand, also provides important input about your overall health, and can diagnose eye conditions like cataracts, diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, glaucoma and other eye diseases.
VSP vision insurance requires customers to sign up for a year of coverage at a time. You can make monthly payments, but you can’t cancel until the year is up. Also, your annual plan will automatically renew by charging to the credit card on file unless you cancel. VSP will notify you 60 days before your insurance comes up for renewal.
There are no discounts available to any individuals buying a VSP vision insurance plan. However, VSP does provide discounts and savings to members via their VSP Exclusive Member Extras, providing exclusive offers from VSP and leading industry brands, totaling more than $3,000 in savings.
As a VSP member, you can get access to Exclusive Member Extras, including:
