Prior to the aughts, if you wanted to buy high end cosmetics, perfume, and skincare you had to go to a department store counter and endure long minutes of hard-sell pitches and demos before you could even make a purchase. Unlike other beauty emporiums selling mostly luxury, designer brands, Ulta Beauty offers a healthy mix of high-end (MAC, Estee Lauder, Urban Decay, Clarins, Tom Ford, etc) drugstore (Revlon, e.l.f. cosmetics, Burt’s Bees, Maybelline, CoverGirl, L’Oreal), and indie cosmetics; skincare, men’s and women’s fragrances, bath and body products, skincare, haircare, nail polish, and its own Ulta Beauty Collection brand of makeup. It also offers vlogger favorite s such as Kylie Cosmetics, ColourPop, Anastasia Beverly Hills, BECCA, and Too Faced; as well as cult Korean brands like Skinfood, TonyMoly, COSRX, and klairs.
As of February 2017, the company stocks over 20,000 products from about 500 beauty brands across all categories and price points (nearly double than that of their rival Sephora. Ulta also employs over 35,000 associates, where 88% are female. As of February 2019, net sales for Ulta Beauty increased 9.7% to $2.1 billion.

In addition to merchandise, Ulta offers several beauty services with hair and skin care salons located in every store nationwide. Featuring up to ten stations, each salon has a concierge desk, semi-private shampoo and hair color processing area, skin treatment room, and offers services such as waxing; haircut, hair styling & texturing; coloring from Redken-trained hair stylists; skin treatments and facials from Dermalogica-trained skin therapists; manicures from OPI-trained technicians; and professional makeup application by MAC artists. Their Benefit Brow Bar offers brow grooming, tinting, and arching; facial waxing; and eyelash extension services.
