Tracfone Wireless, Inc. (TFWI), or simply Tracfone, is an American prepaid, no-contract mobile phone provider. A major player when it comes to low-cost cell phone plans, Tracfone currently has over 20 million subscribers.

What to Buy

There are a variety of reasons why a prepaid cell phone may be more preferable to some people over a phone tied to a postpaid plan—mostly for legitimate, practical reasons, but others for not so savory ones (thus, unfairly earning prepaid phones the label of “burner phones”)

For those who prefer a prepaid cell phone primarily for its low cost, flexibility, basic communication (particularly with children), and business advantages, mobile virtual network operators (MVNO) like Tracfone Wireless are a popular option for millions of Americans.

Tracfone doesn’t own any wireless network infrastructure, instead, it operates under partnership agreements with the Big 4 cell phone companies--Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile and Sprint--that allow the company to offer cellular phone service to its millions of customers.

When you sign up for Tracfone, you’ll get service on one of those major networks, not all of them. It’s based on your device and location. So, if you’re currently a Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile or Sprint customer, there’s a high probability that you’ll be able to keep your existing phone, phone number, and network when you switch.

Basically, if you’re not a heavy data user and want to save up to 50% on your mobile phone bills, then Tracfone may be the solution for you with numerous benefits such as:

No Contracts or lock-in periods to become a subscriber. Simply install a Tracfone SIM Kit into your new or existing cell phone, buy a plan, and refill when needed. No activation or cancellation fees, ever.

Unbeatable Nationwide Coverage taking advantage of all Big 4 cellular carriers’ 4g LTE infrastructures for the same level of wireless reach and connectivity.

Keep Your Own Phone and even network and phone number when you make the switch to Tracfone (as long as it is unlocked and Tracfone compatible).

Unlimited Carryover of your unused minutes, text and data (for as long as the Service IS active and in use within any six-month period).

No Extra Costs for the ultimate in convenience. No worries about any bills, overages or mystery fees.

To switch to Tracfone, simply 1) have an existing Phone or purchase one of over 30 affordable models offered on; 2) Purchase a device compatible Tracfone SIM Kit from the website or a licensed retailer in your coverage area; 3) Activate your SIM card by using the website, the Tracfone My Account App, or by calling the Tracfone Customer Care Center at 1-800-867-7183; and 4) Refill by purchasing a plan at one of over 90,000 retailers; through Auto-Refill via credit card enrollment; or through, Tracfone My Account App, texting “BUY” to 611611, or by calling the Tracfone Customer Care Center at 1-800-867-7183.

Tracfone’s most popular Prepaid Plans with carryover data start at $20/month, and includes unlimited talk, text and 1GB of 4G LTE data for 30 service days.

The $25/month plan includes 2GB of 4G LTE data, while the $30/month plan allows 3GB of data.

Tracfone also offers the option to add $10/GB if you ever run out of high-speed data. No unlimited data plan is offered.

Other service plan options are also offered, including Basic Phone Plans for 60 ($19.99 basic phone card for 90 service days), 90 ($29.99 basic phone card for 90 service days), and 120 ($39.99 basic phone card for 90 service days) Minutes for talk, text & web; and a variety of 365, 90, 60 and 30 day plans with limited wireless data ranging from $15 to $125.

Meanwhile, if you use your Tracfone for long distance call to other countries, you can purchase Add-ons such as a $10 Global Calling Card to thousands of destinations with rates as low as 1 cent per minute; $5 for 1000 extra texts; and $10 for 500 extra call minutes.

Tracfone also offers an eBay Exclusive Annual Plan in partnership with eBay that features 1,200 minutes, 1,200 texts and 3GB of data for $39.99.

For those who want a new phone, Tracfone sells a limited number (from 30 to 45) of Tracfone SIM-compatible devices available in your zip code area, including new and refurbished phones from Apple, Samsung, LG, and Motorola, with prices ranging from a super cheap $4.99 for a refurbished Alcatel to over $400 for a brand new iPhone 8 Plus.

Do take note that when you choose to switch to Tracfone, you won’t get many premium features other than the unlimited rollover data which is perhaps the most valuable perk that you get with this low-cost carrier. Unlike other carriers and their data plans, Tracfone doesn’t support mobile hotspots and video streaming is at a just passable 480p.

As for customer service, there’s no in-person support for Tracfone users, so any issues that you may have activating, setting up or using your device will be handled through phone or chat customer service.

Customers can also get fast answers to common questions — including data usage — by dialing 611611 from their device.

Tracfone offers a Student Discount program in partnership with Student Beans. Get 25% off a phone + plan purchase when both are bought in a single transaction at Tracfone with Student Beans. Simply register with Student Beans to verify your student status and get your student discount.

Finally, sign up your email with the website and receive a 25% off coupon upon subscription to a Tracfone plan and/or purchase of a phone.

Is It Time to Buy?

Need a second cellular phone line or simply want to save on calls and texts? With easy refills available at major retailers and online, Tracfone makes switching to a prepaid carrier convenient. If you don’t use a lot of data, its contract-free, flexible, and unlimited rollover data plans make Tracfone an attractive option four yourself or your family members.
