Introduction

ThriftBooks is an American online bookseller. One of the largest sellers of used books in the world, it sells over 13 million used and new books, DVDs, CDs, VHS tapes, video games, and audio cassettes. It also partners with libraries to sell their unsorted books in a profit-sharing arrangement.

What to Buy

Founded in 2003 by two entrepreneurs who developed the first iteration of the software algorithm to list and price books on Amazon.com, ThriftBooks soon struck out on their own and is now reported to be the largest online seller of used books in the world with a revenue of $150 million and approximately 25 million books sold per year—more than Amazon!

ThriftBooks sources their millions of used books from a variety of places, including thrift stores, donations from charities, and libraries from all across the world. The books are then shipped to one of their 11 warehouses where they are individually checked by a ThriftBooks employee for saleability and are rated according to the book’s condition and features: New (brand new, unused, unread copy in pristine condition); Like New (minimally handled but unread copy in perfect condition. Dust cover is intact; pages are clean and feature no notes or folds of any kind); Very Good (a book that has been read but remains in excellent condition. May contain a previous owner’s name, otherwise, pages and binding are intact); Good (book has been read and spine shows sign of wear, pages and cover are in clean condition but may include limited notes, highlighting, stamping, or previous owner inscriptions); Acceptable (copy is readable, pages and cover are intact though the dust cover may be missing; may include margin notes that don’t obscure the text).

You can start shopping for titles on ThriftBooks.com by typing in a title, author name, or an ISBN into the search bar at the top of any page. Or you can browse by main menu drop-down categories including All Categories, Fiction, Kids, Young Adult, and Collectibles. You can also use the filters to look for specific items by Genre, Format Condition, Price Range, and Language.

When you find a title you like, click on the thumbnail to see a “Book Overview” as well as all available formats and editions for sale. Then choose your preferred copy by adding it to your Cart or Wish List. After you have added all the books you wish to purchase to your shopping cart, click on the Shopping Cart icon in the upper right hand corner of your screen to view your items, select a shipping method, add or delete items, or save your entire order to a Wish List. Or click on the “Proceed to Checkout” button in the lower right corner of the shopping cart to complete your purchase.

Want even more discounted books? Save 10% instantly on more than 100,000 titles with ThriftBooks Deals. Rated in Good or Acceptable condition, these books feature a “red deal tag” with prices usually starting at $3.99. To find qualifying items, go to the Offers link on the main menu or choose the "ThriftBooks Deals" filter in your Search results. The discount will be applied to your cart.
