Introduction

Rumpl is a Portland, Oregon-based outdoor gear startup that specializes in warm, lightweight travel blankets. With their blankets made from the same performance and technical materials of your favorite jacket, they pair technical materials found in premium outdoor gear with bold, exciting aesthetics to update a centuries-old, traditional blanket category.

Rumpl was founded by Wylie Robinson in 2013 after being caught in a blizzard while returning from a ski trip. Stranded in freezing temperatures in a van that wouldn’t start and out of cellphone range, the thing that kept him (and co-founder Nick Polinko) warm was their synthetic down sleeping bags.

Returning safely to their homes after the experience, Robinson and Polinko were inspired to create blankets out of the same high-performance material used in the premium sleeping bags that kept them warm and safe. Borrowing a sewing machine, the first Rumpl “Puffy” blankets were hand sewn in a cramped San Francisco apartment. After several months using the blankets, the two realized they had stumbled on to an idea much grander than just a sleeping bag blanket. The materials typically found in everyday blankets hadn’t evolved in hundreds of years—the entire category wasn’t utilizing any of the material innovation that was taking place in apparel, outdoor gear, and activewear.

After launching a super successful Kickstarter campaign that saw them getting funded in less than 24 hours. Robinson and Polinko ultimately hit more than 10x the original campaign goal and realized that others—not only outdoor enthusiasts—wanted more from an everyday blanket. Since that initial Kickstarter success, Rumpl has grown from a single homemade ‘sleeping bag blanket’ to a whole line of travel blankets, blankets for home, pet beds, travel gear, and more. Rumpl was also featured in the Season 12 premiere of the top reality TV program Shark Tank and received B Corporation certification in March of 2021.

One of the brand’s core values is to “Look To The Future Responsibly”. In 2019, Rumpl completely redesigned their core line of blankets to use only 100% post-consumer recycled materials, reducing their carbon footprint. Rumpl now recycles over 5 million discarded plastic bottles through their supply chain every year. They are also proud to be a member of 1% For The Planet, which means they donate 1% of all revenue to environmental non-profits. Rumpl is also a member of the freshmen cohort of brands that are certified Climate Neutral. Since 2020, each year they offset 100% of the company’s carbon footprint by purchasing offset credits.
