Based in Melbourne, Australia, Redbubble is an award-winning global online marketplace for print-on-demand products designed using professional artist-submitted creations. Products include T-shirts, wall art, phone cases, hoodies, stickers, stationery, gifts, and home accessories.
What to Buy
Founded in 2006 in Melbourne, Australia, Redbubble started off as an online design workshop selling exclusively designed apparel and gift items. Through the years, the company expanded into an artist marketplace where creators could join the site for free and have their creations printed on demand on a variety of products all while maintaining the copyrights to their work and having the ability to regulate their own prices.
Redbubble is similar to other Print on Demand (POD) platforms out there with the major difference being that they run their operations as an independent storefront and are not a POD application extension providing fulfillment support for other e-commerce platforms like Shopify. So, Redbubble is a platform for those artists who choose not to establish an e-commerce store but would prefer to use Redbubble to upload their designs and sell their products directly from its platform.
According to a vast majority of both sellers and buyers, the Redbubble advantages are 1) their extensive range of high quality print-ready products and 2) the better printing quality it offers compared to many of their competitors due, in part, to Redbubble’s quality control protocols and use of the latest state-of-the-art printing technologies.
Whether you intend to sell or buy a product with a unique design on Redbubble, first go to their Redbubble.com website (or download their app for Apple or Android). The default landing page is specifically directed to those who are Buyers and, right off the bat, you can start to browse according to product ranges, including Clothing (T-shirts, hoodies & sweatshirts, leggings, dresses, tank tops, skirts, and socks); Stickers ; Wall Art (posters, canvas prints, framed prints, photographic prints, art prints, and more); Home & Living (bath mats, duvet covers, floor cushions, clocks, mugs); Phone Cases (primarily for Apple and Samsung mobile phones); Kids & Babies (clothes and onesies); Accessories (bags, water bottles, scarves, tech accessories); Stationery (hardcover journals, spiral notebooks, pen cases, postcards); and Gifts.
Inside each category, you can further filter your choices according to features such as Theme, Artwork Medium, Finish, and Bestsellers.
Content creators and Sellers, on the other hand, can start a partnership with Redbubble by first clicking on the Sell Your Art link at the top of the Redbubble homepage. From there, you can sign up for an account, upload your custom designs and logos, put them on your preferred products, set your pricing, and promote your Redbubble co-branded products. Redbubble handles all the printing, transactions, shipping, and all other issues that may arise.
You can choose as many categories and as many products as you want where your designs will be printed; however, it is recommended that you submit adjusted versions of your design to compatibly fit differently sized products. A design that looks good on a t-shirt may not be as attractive on a phone case, therefore, artists should keep that in mind when selecting products and submitting final artwork.
As for getting paid, sellers get to set the profit margin they desire on each product. Redbubble only charges for the base price of the raw item for printing and anything extra that you charge goes directly to you. For example, if an item costs $5 (base price) and you sell it for $12 then you make $7 in profit. You can either set a percentage markup and have it applied across the board to all categories and products, or you can vary your percentage markups according to product (such as 15% for T-shirts, 5% for phone cases, etc.).
If you’d rather set a cash amount markup instead of a percentage, you can do that as well. Redbubble only charges you for the base price of the products and everything that you make on top is yours to keep.
Redbubble, meanwhile, has a very comprehensive Community & Content Guidelines policy which content creators are strictly urged to follow. A breach of Redbubble’s guidelines can result in a formal warning, account suspension, or account closure. Furthermore, Redbubble abides by all international treaties that relate to intellectual property, copyright, trademark, publicity rights, and fair use and, therefore, strongly ask that members make sure that all the works they upload consist of their very own, original ideas and are not infringing on the intellectual property or publicity rights of another without express consent. Members, in addition, agree to abide by all of these provisions by signing the Redbubble User Agreement before uploading any piece of work.
On a final note for sellers, they should be aware that although selling products with their artwork through the Redbubble marketplace guarantees a large, established potential global market with name recognition; it comes with the downside of no exclusive branding at all for you personally. You won’t get the benefits of branding your own store or creating a label and tagline for your work. You would simply be one of the thousands of other freelance artists selling their work on Redbubble.
Those who find the inability to promote one’s work through personal branding on Redbubble would probably be better off considering putting up their own e-commerce shop and use a print on demand app such as Printful instead.
In relation to this, members/sellers should refrain from uninvited self-promotion outside of their Redbubble portfolio and shop pages nor should they self-promote themselves in the comments sections under another member’s work. Artists are free, however, to promote products and services they provide on Redbubble in their social media accounts, provided they use Redbubble’s official “Promotional Image” template and/or their Redbubble shop embedded script. In all cases, the Redbubble brand will always be highlighted. For more information about Redbubble’s Self-Promotion guidelines simply visit the page on the Seller section of Redbubble.com.
Redbubble buyers can pay for their purchases via credit and debit card (Visa, MasterCard, and American Express), PayPal, Apple Pay, Amazon Pay, Sofort (Austria, Belgium, Germany, Netherlands, Italy and Spain), and Redbubble digital gift card.
Sellers, meanwhile, get paid within each payment cycle that begins from the 15th of a month to the 15th of the next month either by direct deposit in a bank account (only available in select countries) and PayPal.
Manufacturing and printing of Redbubble orders takes around 1-3 days depending on the warehouse it will be shipped from, the type of the product, and the design itself. Items will be shipped Standard or Express via UPS, FedEx, DHL, or USPS. Shipping times vary depending on the type of shipping selected, location from where it is shipped, and destination. Shipments can be tracked through the “Where’s my order?” page on Redbubble.
As for shipping costs, they are calculated along with your order on the checkout page and will depend on your location and shipping option preferred.
If you are in any way unsatisfied with your purchase, Redbubble has a generous 90-day Returns & Exchanges policy. Exchanges are valid for the following reasons: wrong garment style, color, or size; or wrong case or skin style. Returns, meanwhile, are subject to approval along with a return request submission.
Finally, whether you’re buying, selling, or just browsing for the time being, Redbubble invites visitors to sign up to their Email List where you can receive 10% off on your first order, receive promo notices, check out featured artists works, and much more.
