What to Buy

Popular in the 1900s up to the 1960s, home chemistry sets were the toy of choice of many a budding scientist as well as quite a few Nobel Prize-winning chemists in their childhoods. Through the years, these mini labs would variably contain not only the expected equipment such as beakers, test tubes, scales, mortars & pestles, and harmless chemicals like sodium bicarbonate, but also “what in the world were they thinking?” wonders including acids, blowtorches, sodium cyanide, and even radioactive uranium ore!

The rise in safety standards and consumer protection laws, however, resulted in the waning popularity of chemistry sets, until the last ones were sold in the early 1990s. Fortunately, the Internet Age has made STEM fields more attractive and popular (not to mention lucrative) than ever before and, thus, also necessitated the much appreciated return of the beloved—and vastly upgraded—chemistry set.

Created by a group of science enthusiasts, programmers, and design engineers who realized their kids weren’t getting the same fun, hands-on science experiences provided by the chemistry sets of their childhoods; MEL Science combines hands-on experiments with high tech Virtual/Augmented Reality (VR/AR) technology to offer a monthly subscription science kit to jumpstart your child’s scientific journey. With an emphasis on chemistry, these subscription sets provide your children with the chance to create carbon snakes, hot ice, copper coral, tin hedgehogs, foam eruptions, Martian rust, tin dendrite, galaxy in a bottle, and more safely and from the convenience of your own home.

Already popular with the homeschooling community as a great alternative to school labs, MEL Science kits are also an especially apt option today for those who are studying online during the COVID-19 pandemic.

MEL Science currently offers three types of kits: MEL Chemistry (with supplementary MEL Chemistry VR), MEL Physics, and MEL Kids, all of which you can subscribe to online via MELScience.com.

MEL Chemistry is the company’s original and most popular product by far consisting of 24 chemistry sets with each covering a particular chemistry topic and including 2 to 3 fun and exciting experiments. Good for children 9-years-old and above, the subscription kit allows you to get one new set delivered to your door every month for up to 2 years of learning.

Once you subscribe, you will first receive a Starter Kit which contains all the main chemistry equipment you will need for your experiments such as a Borosilicate glass beaker and flask, VR headset, Macro lens, smartphone/tablet stand, safety glasses and tray, and solid fuel stove/burner (additional materials needed for the experiments such as glass bowls and sugar can be easily sourced at home).

Each month, thereafter, you will receive a box filled with 2 to 3 hands-on experiments (with enough chemical reagents for at least 2 attempts), featuring visual step-by-step instructions, and access to the MEL Chemistry App which is your conduit to the futuristic VR Lessons experience.

A revolutionary new way to teach chemistry, MEL Chemistry VR (using the VR headset) consists of over 30 interactive VR lessons and extends what you can learn through the experiments and are aligned with the school chemistry curriculum. Audio-visual learners will especially appreciate clicking a button on the app to get instant info on the compounds they are working on. There’s also a Teacher Mode that allows teachers conducting online classes to instantly connect to all student devices and control the progress of each student.

MEL Physics is designed for children ages 8 to 14 and is a great way to introduce your children to the wonders of rudimentary Physics. Currently offering 18 sets (for a total of 25 experiments), the MEL Physics kit offers 2 to 3 physics experiments per month plus access to 30+VR Lessons. Unlike the MEL Chemistry sets that require the Starter Kit for all sets, each MEL Physics kit comes with all necessary hardware, components, and instructions to conduct the experiments successfully.

MEL Kids is the company’s newest offering designed for children ages 5 to 10-years-old and currently has four kits in its subscription plan focusing on topics like Pressure, Aerodynamics, Sound, and Reactive Motion, with modules for Electricity, Magnetism, and more coming soon. Each kit comes with a building set, hands-on projects, educational comics, activities, and access to an AR App.

Whatever kit you choose, you will receive an experiment set with experiments illustrating a designated topic. One new topic is introduced each month. You can check the full list of topics for the entire subscription in the individual “Sets” pages to see which sets you can receive each month. The topics are looped such that the start date of your subscription does not matter; you will eventually receive all the experiment sets.
