Introduction

Owned and managed by Getty Images, iStock Photo is among the world’s best source of quality stock content, be it photos, illustrations, videos or audio, at affordable prices.

What to Buy

The many royalty-free images available on iStock Photo are separated into two main categories - Signature collection where their very best images and video clips are grouped under; and the Essentials collection which contains the standard stock that can get the job done. Naturally, Signature stock will cost more.

iStock Photo uses a system that mimics the in-app purchase (IAP) system used in most freemium apps, where you buy virtual credits using real money and then use those credits to purchase your stock content. Purchases done with credits will provide you with extended licenses which will allow you to use the file in more ways than say an image obtained via a subscription.

As such, buying stock content individually can turn out to be quite costly. Thankfully, the site provides you with a discount code so you can get 10% off your next credit pack order (only applicable to pack purchases only). Also, do take note that if you do not sign in at least once a year, you will lose the credits in your account.

Now, if you prefer a subscription, iStock Photo has many plans to offer. However, you should be aware that these subscriptions only include images, namely photos and illustrations. Videos and audios have to purchased using credits.

In terms of subscriptions, you can choose to opt for a plan that allows 10 images per month for a single month or an entire year. This plan will not only give you access to all the images on iStock but also images from their premium Signature collection. Best yet, you can rollover any unused downloads to the next month up to a total of 250 unused downloads.

However, if you lost your subscription even for a day due to not renewing your subscription or having auto-renewal disabled, you will lose all the unused downloads you have. You should also know that images licensed with subscriptions must be used in an end project within 30 days of the end of the subscription plan or the license for the file will be terminated.

The other plan available has a cost that depends solely on how many images you’ll need per month - From 10 images to 250 images per month This plan only allows you access to their budget Essential collection, though you will still be able to rollover any unused downloads to the next month.

You can try both subscription plans for a month, and if you like them, then you can choose to purchase a subscription.

By being a member of iStock Photo, you can even get some nice deals with any of its partners, including GoDaddy, InVision, Skillshare and more.

Highlights

The site also provides you with several extra features, such as the iStock editor that you can use to edit the images you buy by cropping, resizing, adding texts, using filters, or uploading logos. There’s also a Boards feature which works like the boards on Pinterest where you can collect, share and manage all your images and videos in a single convenient location. This feature is available for free unlike the more robust but not free stock content management tool that is sold at Shutterstock, but the functions you can use are admittedly a bit lacking. It works well enough though!

That being said, iStock Photo offers several plugins for you to easily import any of iStock’s stock content into the designing tool of your choice, be it Adobe’s Creative Cloud or InVision’s Craft Stock. This plugin will allow you to easily search for the stock content you need, and seamlessly integrate the stock into your graphics and designs. You can even tailor your plugins to match your needs.

For those who are constantly on the go, you can get iStock’s app on both Android or iOS so you can access your purchased assets whenever and wherever. You can even browse and search for images during transit, or share links to images to anyone you like.

Is It Time to Buy?

iStock Photos may not be as popular as Shutterstock when it comes to stock content, though some may beg to differ, it still has quite a large variety of unique stock content which is perfect for you to craft that perfect marketing content. The site also offers various plans that is suitable for different budgets and even if the plans don’t work, you can always buy their stock content using credits. Best of all, it provides a simple stock content management system for free, unlike other stock content sites.
