Introduction

Identity Guard is an American-based privacy and identity theft protection service offering a variety of innovative anti-identity theft solutions to help individuals and businesses protect their personal and private information from theft, fraud, and other technological threats such as account takeovers and data breaches.

What to Buy

The more interconnected our lives are with the internet, social media, e-commerce, online banking, and the digital space in general, the more there is a need for information protection. Founded in 2001 by Intersections, Inc. (now rebranded as Aura)—one of the pioneers in identity security—Identity Guard provides comprehensive products that enable clients to react and help protect their sensitive information from evolving technological threats and provide 24/7 monitoring to alert them of activity that may indicate fraud.

Identity Guard has partnered with IBM in licensing IBM’s Watson artificial intelligence technology to power their monitoring systems. Using Watson’s algorithms that predict how your digital habits could make you vulnerable, as well as its scanning software to scour through thousands of transactions in a millisecond to detect any potential threats that stand out; Identity Guard then alerts you via email or app notification instantly as soon as anomalous activity is detected. This digitally-focused service helps nip any potential threats in the bud before they can compromise your sensitive data.

To subscribe to Identity Guard, simply visit IdentityGuard.com and select among three (3) Identity Protection Plans for either Individuals or Families. Meanwhile, if you are a business owner or broker, you can select between two (2) Breach Response plans, as well as avail of Identity Guard’s special Employee Benefits rate for your staff or clients.

Take note that subscription to any of Identity Guard products requires you to provide your name, address, phone number, date of birth, email address, and Social Security Number to set up your account and additional monitoring services. Your Social Security Number is required to verify your identity as well as to monitor for certain signs that may indicate identity theft. You may also be asked to provide credit card information for billing purposes.

Identity Guard offers three identity-protection plans for Individuals: Value, Total, and Premier.

Their lowest-cost Value plan priced at $8.99/month is designed for those who are just interested in basic online protections and scanning and includes Watson AI cloud monitoring; Risk Management report; Dark Web monitoring; safe browsing tools, Anti-Phishing mobile app (for iOS and Android) with extensions for Chrome, Safari, and Firefox browsers; a $1 million insurance package that includes reimbursement; and a dedicated case manager in case of identity theft and warnings of high-risk transactions.

On the other hand, if you prefer to receive basic financial data reporting on top of online data security, Identity Guard Total may be for you. For $19.99/month, in addition to all of the Value plan's features, Total includes a monthly VantageScore 3.0 credit score pulled from the TransUnion credit bureau only (and excludes credit scoring using the FICO 8 modelling used by the other top credit reporting agencies Equifax and Experian). Total also provides alerts for tax refunds, when it pings certain changes to your credit files and bank accounts; address monitoring, and if someone tries to open a bank account in your name.

While Identity Guard Total does not provide a complete credit score report, you will receive a more thorough annual report (with FICO scores) compiled from all three major CRAs—Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion—by subscribing to Identity Guard Premier for $24.99/month. With Premier, not only do you get the features included in the Total package plus the 3-bureau credit report, but an added Social Insight Report that tells you how to optimize and secure your Facebook profile.

Want online identity protection and monitoring not only for yourself, but for your loved ones as well? Then, for an extra $6 (for Value) or $10 (for Total and Premier) per month, you can opt for Identity Guard’s Family versions of each plan that will cover all residents of a single address.

Furthermore, you can receive extra savings and get 2 months FREE (or 17% off your yearly subscription price) if you pay upfront for your subscription plan annually instead of monthly.

And if you are a company owner or broker wishing to provide added value for your employees or clients, Identity Guard for Business provides the tools you need to help prepare for a breach event, respond to a data breach, or help protect employees and clients from the damaging effects of identity theft. Available in Essentials and Total Protection plans, the Breach Response package includes (as part of Essential): Social Security Number monitoring; online “black market” monitoring; ID verification alerts; account takeover alerts; identity theft victim assistance; lost wallet protection; and $1,000,000 identity theft insurance.

Total Protection, in addition to all the benefits of Essential, also features 3-bureau credit monitoring, alerts, reports, and scores; public record monitoring; address change monitoring; keyboard encryption software; anti-virus software; and account access via mobile app.

Highlights

Most customers subscribe to identity protection services not only for the tools to prevent fraud, data breaches, and identity theft but also for Insurance purposes should a highly-sophisticated attack occur despite all efforts to prevent it from occurring in the first place. In these cases, Identity Guard offers up to $1 million in coverage (underwritten by insurance company subsidiaries or affiliates of American International Group‚ Inc.) to account for reimbursement of lost funds that your credit card company isn’t liable for as well as the fees of the lawyers, investigators, and experts you'll need during your identity-recovery process.

The insurance also reimburses you for court fees and overnight shipping charges for new IDs and documents, unauthorized withdrawals from bank and investment accounts, up to $2,000 per week in lost wages (for up to five weeks), up to $1,000 in travel expenses, and up to $1,000 to hire an accountant.

Even if an attack doesn’t reach that worst-case scenario, Identity Guard can assign you a case manager, available day or night, to help you freeze your credit and help you recover your identity in the event it finds your data being used anomalously. They also provide you a list of contacts at major credit card companies who can help during an identity emergency or when an error shows up on a report.

And, uniquely among identity-protection services, if you’re a subscriber of their Total or Premier plans, Identity Guard has a partnership with a top tax-preparation company that will alert you when your tax return is electronically filed – a valuable early-warning system if a thief files your return to get your tax refund.

Furthermore, if you need help understanding your dashboard, interpreting reports, or setting up your account, Identity Guard’s Tech Support provides technical assistance, installation help, as well as explanations of ways your identity can be stolen (available Monday-Friday from 8AM to 11PM EST and Saturdays from 9AM to 6PM EST).

Finally, Identity Guard makes it very easy and simple to cancel your plan subscription at any time. Just go to your “My Account” (upper right on the main online-interface page) and tap the “Cancellation”. Once your cancellation is processed, your account will remain active until the end of the prepaid term, but it will no longer automatically renew. Annual subscribers may also be eligible for a refund of the annual renewal price if your request is made within 30 days of being charged (refund is limited to the fees paid for the then-current membership term).
