DoorDash is a San Francisco-based technology company using logistics and a network of contracted drivers to deliver prepared food from restaurants to customers on demand. What to Buy
Now a $13 billion company, DoorDash is first-and-foremost an on-demand logistics startup that just so happens to use its delivery logistics infrastructure to connect restaurants with customers. The DoorDash business model is designed to benefit both users and restaurants as well as provide income opportunities to independent drivers.
DoorDash is ideal for singles and families who choose not to cook at a particular moment; foodies with little time to go out to eat; college students and workers with no access to kitchen facilities; people who want to significantly expand their food choices beyond their neighborhood eateries; and employees who want a ready meal to avoid wasting time and disrupting their work routines.
Restaurants, meanwhile, benefit from the significant increase in customer base; an existing driver pool to make deliveries for them (no need to hire additional manpower); online branding opportunities; and less reliance on expanding store or dining space—all of which translate into less operations expenditure and more profits.
DoorDash drivers, or ”Dashers”, furthermore, receive a flat payment for every delivery they make on a weekly basis and usually make an average of $600 per week.
To start using DoorDash, simply visit DoorDash.com or download the mobile app for Android and iOS, enter a delivery address and delivery date (advance orders are welcome here!) and start browsing a list of restaurants in your general area. You can browse restaurants according to a variety of categories such as Featured National Partners, First Order, $0 Delivery Fee (restaurants that offer a $0 delivery free on your first order with them), Local Favorites, Cuisine, Vegetarian, Rating, Price and more.
After choosing your restaurant, add items to your cart, and check out (take note that some restaurants on the platform require a minimum purchase before you can complete your order). Those using the app will automatically be charged according to their pre-saved account and payment details. Those using the service on the website will be required to sign in using their email, Facebook, or Google account. Once the transaction is approved and the order has been received by DoorDash, it forwards the order to the restaurant where it is prepared and packed for delivery.
Proprietary software used by Dashers on their phones allow them to accept orders depending on their availability and vicinity. Upon accepting an order request, the Dasher then picks up the packed food order from the restaurant. DoorDash provides tracking at every phase of the order from acceptance, travel to location, pick-up, and en-route to address so you have an estimated time of delivery.
On the other hand, if you’re available to visit a restaurant and carry out your order, you can also use the DoorDash platform to save time by ordering from hundreds of restaurants in your area and take out your food via the Pickup option upon checkout--with absolutely zero fees.
DoorDash requires you to provide digital payment information on top of your delivery address when ordering through their website or app. DoorDash accepts all major credit cards and debit cards (many reviewers recommend using a credit card, however, to make it easier for you to dispute charges in case issues arise in delivery).
Fees vary for each restaurant on the DoorDash platform. You can see a breakdown of the fees from the checkout screen so you’ll know what the total is for your order before paying. You’ll also receive a receipt showing your order subtotal, applicable taxes, fees, and gratuity. The total cost of your order includes the price of the menu items and tax, an optional tip to the Dasher, and a delivery fee and service fee depending on the restaurant. In some cases, there may be an additional fee for orders below a minimum subtotal and for orders when demand is especially high.
The issue of tipping is where DoorDash has garnered some controversy. Previously, Dashers were guaranteed a minimum payment per delivery, with DoorDash paying a $1 base, then providing an additional payment boost when a customer’s tip didn’t meet the minimum — a system that looked like tips were being used to subsidize DoorDash’s payments. That means when you choose to tip, you give it to DoorDash, not directly to the driver.
Now, under a new, revised system recently rolled-out, DoorDash will pay their Dashers a base between $2 and $10 (the amount will depend on circumstances such as delivery distance and duration), with additional bonuses from DoorDash. Still, it is something to take into consideration before you choose the tip amount.
Meanwhile, select regions offer DashPass, a subscription program that offers a $0 delivery fee and reduced service fees for subscribers when ordering $12 or more from any DashPass-eligible restaurant (look for the checkmark). Subscription is $9.99/month, and you can cancel anytime with no strings attached (check your app for area coverage and sign-up details).
Finally, introduce your friends and family to the DoorDash experience through their Customer Friends and Family Referral Program and get a chance to earn $20 in referral credits for each successful new user who places their first order (worth over $10). Those referrals, in turn, also get $20 off ($5 off on each of their first 4 orders, applied automatically at checkout). Simply share your unique referral link with a maximum of 25 people you know personally and, once your referral has placed a qualifying order, you’ll receive a confirmation email, and your credits will be automatically applied to your next order.
