Introduction

Autodesk is a leading design-oriented software company that specializes in creating important tools for creators worldwide. Whether you are in media and entertainment, architecture, engineering, construction, product design or manufacturing, you probably have used an Autodesk product one time or the other.

What to Buy

Autodesk developes software that most common folk won’t be using unless you are a creator in any of those industries mentioned, and boy! They do have a lot of quality software. The most renowned software is probably AutoCAD which comes in varying forms and versions to fit the needs of various industries but basically, it allows you to easily produce both 2D and 3D computer-aided designs (CADs). This designing tool is used in various industries ranging from civil engineering and construction to product design and manufacturing.

The close runner-up would likely be Maya – a tool that’s crucial in 3D animation, modeling, simulation and rendering, particularly in the entertainment industry where it is used to design 3D assets for film, games and TV. Aside from MotionBuilder and Mudbox, 3DS Max is another tool that goes hand-in-hand with Maya. It helps in design visualization and is mostly used in games rather than the other forms of entertainment media.

However, if you are in the Architecture, Engineering, or Construction industry, then you will likely be more familiar with tools like Revit, which is Autodesk’s software for Building Information Modeling (BIM); and InfraWorks, a geospatial and engineering BIM platform for planning, design and analysis.

They also produce other software like the Alias suite, Inventor Professional/HSM, and Shotgun, as well as software packages such as Fusion 360 which is a cloud-based 3d CAD/CAM/CAE software that is used for product design. It is naturally much better than having only AutoCAD to work with.

Due to the pretty high cost (annual subscriptions can reach in the thousands), all of these products come with free trials so you can at least familiarize yourself with the software before deciding to buy it (or not).

Highlights

One really good thing that Autodesk has, unlike many its competitors, is the fact that you can trade-in your old license (a.k.a. an oftentimes perpetual license for an older version of a software that doesn’t include maintenance, or in other words, updates) to get a nice discount when you trade up to the newest product of your choice or when you decide to move over to one of its subscription plans (1-year or 3-year). You can always try things out first and if you’re happy, then you can make the arrangement permanent.

This sort of flexibility is surprisingly rare in the software industry and it’s really nice that Autodesk offers this option.

Of course, if you’re a student currently studying in an educational institution in a related field, you can get some of the software from Autodesk for free. Naturally, there will be some restrictions in place and the approval process can be pretty strict.

Is It Time to Buy?

There’s only one reason why Autodesk is the go-to software company when it comes to creative designing tools regardless of which industry you’re from – their products are of top-notch quality… and with quality tools, you can create quality designs. So, yes, if quality designing tools are what you seek, then it’s time to buy from Autodesk! After all, if you’re still unsure whether to invest in any of the products, they do offer free trials that you can make use of.
